Dallas’ Curly Hair Routine

Spread the love

I get questions all the time on what I use for my daughters curls. Those who have curls know that is not just a simple answer so I figured that I would film her curly hair routine so that you can see all of the steps.

Let me start by acknowledging that everyone’s curls are different. What has worked for me and my daughter may not work for your curls. I have been trying to find the best products for curly hair for some time now and I am very pleased with the products that we are currently using Not Your Mothers Curl Talk

Here are the products that we use and love! These products work very well with our hair and they are only $7.74 at Walmart. Check out my video for the full routine.

Product List

Herbal Essences bio:renew Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo This shampoo leaves her hair feeling squeaky clean while hydrated at the same time. This shampoo does not leave her hair feeling like it has been stripped of all of its oils.

Not Your Mothers Curl Talk Conditioner This conditioner is great! I usually let it sit for about five minutes prior to detangling so that it is able to soak into the follicles. It helps when detangling.

Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Hair Mask I use this deep conditioning mask about once a week to quench, nourish and soften her hair.

Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Curl Defining Cream

Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Sculpting Gel

Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Activating Mousse

Pattern Shower Brush or Denman Brush

Hair Pick

Microfiber towel When drying curls it is important to use a microfiber towel or a cotton t-shirt to minimize frizz. Be sure to dry the curls just a bit before adding product. Adding product to soaking wet hair contributes to build up because when your hair is soaking wet it does not soak up the product but instead the product will just sit on top.

We use Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Curl Defining Cream which is great for locking in moisture, de-frizzing and adds shine. I definitely do not use a lot of product when it comes to my daughters hair just because it is so thin and I do not want to weigh it down. Her curl type is 3b/c and her curls are fine and silky with a normal to low porosity meaning her hair does not soak up product as much as someone with high porosity hair.

Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Sculpting Gel gel is great for frizz control and firm flexible hold without the flakes that most typical gels cause. Once again do not use too much. Too much gel will give your hair that crunchy feeling and possibly leave your hair looking wet even once it’s dry.

Lastly I use Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Activating Mousse This mousse is great for volume and shine. Be sure to give a little extra attention to the crown of your head to help with volume but do not over saturate an area or it may leave your hair feeling heavy.

I prefer to let her hair air dry but If we are low on time we may also use a diffuser to speed up the drying process. When diffusing be sure to keep it on the low setting to minimize frizz.

To finish styling I have her flip her head over so that I can brush her curls to the top of her head. This is very important for creating volume at the top of the head. Also using a styling brush is a game changer. In this video I am using the Pattern Shower Brush $17 but you can also use the Denman Brush $19.95 which I believe are pretty much one in the same. We love both of these brushes as they help to clump and define curls. It will help to create a head full of ringlets while minimizing frizz.

Once I am happy with the ringlets created by the brush I have her give her curls a shake to separate any of the larger chunks. Lastly, I have her do a hair flip and then we wait for it to dry. Try not to touch the curls throughout the drying process to minimize frizz if possible. Once dry I will once again flip her head over and use a pick to lift the roots to add extra volume but be careful not to comb through the curls.

I hope you find this video tutorial helpful. I would love to know if you have any tips or tricks to share. I love learning about curls! Anyone else have type 3b/c with normal to low porosity? What do you use for your hair?
