The Year of Yes

Spread the love

For the year of 2021 I have the plan to say yes more when it comes to my family. I often find myself caught up in the never ending list of things to do, to the point that I feel like I am missing out on the simple joys of life. My kids are always asking to play catch, play a game, do nails, play dress up. To be honest my first response is often we can do it later. And although that is not really a no right away, it turns into a no when I never get around to it.

My husband will often ask me to watch action movies or sports with him. I always act like I don’t like to do either and I don’t even know why. When we do watch an action movie I almost always enjoy it, the issue is it takes a lot for me to agree to watch in the first place. When it comes to watching sports my husband has always been puzzled on why I don’t like to watch with him since I do have a love for sports. I am realizing that on both accounts I am a bit set in my ways. Ever since I was young I have always said that I don’t like watching sports on tv because I prefer to play sports myself or at least watch in person. Just recently I have been watching more sports with Drew. And no surprise to him I do really enjoy it. I enjoy cheering for our teams, critiquing the game with him and yelling at the tv.

It is crazy to me that it took so long for me to get on board with something so simple. I am realizing that many times I feel too busy or uninterested and choose to say no because that is easier. When in fact saying yes more opens me up to more opportunities and experiences. At the end of the day my family is a huge source of my joy so playing with my kids and making them happy does bring me a lot of joy. And the more things my husband and I have in common the better. So the real question I am asking myself lately is, “why not?”

In order to make the year of yes more of a reality I have decided that I have to do a better job of planning my day and my tasks in a way that leaves time for free time. It is something that I know that I can do but I just need to be more intentional. I especially need to fight the urge to say maybe later which if I am being honest is where my plans go to die.

Here is a small list of things that I would like to try to do more of or at least give a try:

Board games with the kids

Coloring with the family

Video games with Drew (We will see how that goes lol)

Watch more sports

Mommy daughter nails

Baking with the kids

Taking kids to the park

Going on a walk

Watch action movies

Don’t get me wrong those are not things that I dread by any means. As my family grows I find it harder and harder to make time for the simple pleasures of life. Call me crazy but it is not always easy to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. It is an active choice. Choose happiness. What is happiness to you? What are your simple pleasures that you need to make more time for? Comment below I would love to hear from you!

  1. I would like to paint with my daughter more! We both love it! But the clean up always makes me say, “maybe later”. Next time I’ll say YES!
